Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has praised the performance of James Maddison following the club’s 2-1 triumph over Sheffield United on the road. The Foxes opened the scoring through Jamie Vardy and Maddison was the distributor with a sublime through ball which the former converted with relative ease.

Olivier McBurnie levelled the proceedings for the Blades after the hour mark but that was not sufficient to share the spoils after Harvey Barnes’ wonder strike to seal the victory for the Foxes. Speaking after the game, Rodgers hailed the showing of Maddison and believes he should be knocking the door for a senior call-up with the England national side.

He said: “There’s not too many players who can play the pass he (Maddison) made for the first goal. His touch and his through ball were sensational. Jamie doesn’t even need a touch, it comes right into his path and he does what he does best, it was a wonderful finish. He’s at a really high level this early in the season is James. He’s a player of quality and I’m sure Gareth will have been having a good look at him.”

Maddison has been widely regarded as one of the most consistent performers from the number 10 role and he has taken the form to another level during the current campaign. At present, the likes of Jesse Lingard have struggled to make much of an impression at the club level and that could pave the way for Maddison to make the national team for the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo.

Meanwhile, Leicester have made a bright start to the proceedings this time around and they are currently occupying the third spot on the temporary basis. They have a League Cup second round tie against Newcastle United on Wednesday night before facing Bournemouth in the league next weekend.
