The Stoke city defender Robert Huth has revealed that that he was extremely horrified by the meningitis problem at the start of the new season. He has said that he was almost trapped on a flight after the full effects of the problem came to effect in midair. Despite being diagnosed with this deadly disease, the defender played the entire match against Reading. Stoke city managed a 1-1 draw from the match. It was only a few weeks ago that the future of the defender was thrown into doubt after being diagnosed with meningitis. However, he has staged a remarkable recovery to return to first-team action.

Stoke city were playing in the United States as part of the pre-season tour. It was then the player noticed of the first signs of the disease. It was at its worst case during the transfer Atlantic flight from the United States. He was diagnosed with meningitis, but due to the fact that the problem was found at a much earlier stage the play was able to recover without much difficulties. Robert Huth is not the only player to have suffered from meningitis this season, as Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge suffered from the same problem at the start of the season.

“I didn’t feel particularly great while we were out there. On the flight going home, I could feel it getting worse and worse – and 35,000ft up in the sky is not a great place to be when your health is going downhill rapidly. When we got home, I had a couple of days off, but it wasn’t getting any better. And when I had a stinking headache and became highly sensitive to light, the club booked me into hospital for tests – and they kept me in for four nights,” said the 28-year-old.
